To provide Christ-centered events, communication, and resources to better equip, inform, and encourage Iowa home educators to the glory of God!
NICHE is a Christian organization dedicated to observing the Biblical commands of: Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Proverbs 22:6, and Ephesians 6:4.
We promote home education and believe that parents have the God-given mandate and responsibility to oversee the discipleship and education of their children. NICHE is not a church, nor are we an organization meant to replace the ministry of the local church to the home educating family.
The members of the NICHE board of directors each sign a statement of faith, but no faith statements are required of the general membership. The members of the board of the Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators serve three year terms and can be reelected. All board members must either demonstrate a long-term commitment to home education or have home educated one or more of his or her children for at least two years by the time his or her term of office begins.

Homeschool Iowa in Dollars and Cents: Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators' Financial Information by NICHE Board Member Joseph Bailey
As a second generation homeschooler, like many of you I have worked numerous years as a volunteer for NICHE. Recently I was invited into the administrative side of NICHE, and one of the questions I had was about finances. I am a firm believer that finances are a strong indicator of the health and focus of an organization.
First of all, I was happy to see that, unlike Congress, NICHE does have a balanced budget and no debt. If you check out the charts below, you will see that NICHE's annual events are self funding and membership fees as well as some of the revenue from the conference goes to supporting administration and various homeschool advancement activities (such as our free Homeschool Iowa magazine). I was happy to see the administration expenses fairly low at 5% and noticed that member services includes the work of our incredible administrative assistant, Julie Naberhaus (NICHE’s one and only paid part-time staff member).
Next I wanted to know about cash flow and savings. Having adhered to Dave Ramsey's wisdom by keeping a 3-6 month emergency fund for my family's financials, I was happy to see a NICHE savings balance sufficient to survive a lean year.
My final question was how NICHE has done year to year. I quickly realized that last year's funding of future operations was simply replacing savings that were eaten up the previous two years when expenses exceeded income. I'm not sure how your family operates, but if my wife and I need to dip into savings for some unexpected expenses, we pay the savings back as soon as we can. Looking back at the last 5 years for NICHE, the average net income is flat to slightly up. So, I'd say the system is working.
What is my conclusion? NICHE's finances appear to be healthy. And, I have to remind myself that finances are simply a means to an end; indeed they are far from the only means. Just think of the immense value and vision that has been poured in by past and present volunteers. NICHE is simply a humble steward of these bountiful resources in the mission to equip, inform and encourage Iowa home educators to the glory of God.
